Recently, I decided that our monthly meetings with our three teams (Sales Team, Underwriting Team and Customer Care Team) could be better if I solicited input from some of my co-workers. Let me just say that our monthly meetings are a LOT better as a result. Candice Graham, Our Commercial Underwriting Manager, came acrossTHIS ARTICLE that we used to jump start a great conversation at our last Underwriter’s Meeting.
Candice led a discussion prompted by the suggestion proposed by Business Guru Guy Kawasaki in the article. We thought it was an interesting Thought Experiment. It should appeal to you Business Owners out there reading this Newsletter. However, I think even those of you that don’t own a business. . .who are just interested in being the best employee you can be. . .will find utility in it as well.
It works like this: Pretend that the business has failed. If you assume it has failed, try to imagine the reasons why it failed. Some things may be out of your control, like disruption related to new technologies, but most of the reasons are probably things completely within your control. Lack of responsiveness, lack of attention to detail, a failure to make yourself accessible to potential new referral sources are just a few examples of what might cause a business to fail. List them all out. Perhaps you get together with your Team and discuss what could go wrong. In the process, you might find out that you and your Team are not doing all of the things you need to do to be successful. Or maybe you discover that you are doing all the things right, but that recognizing them will help you to realize how very important all of those things are to the continued viability of your business.
Food for thought. . .
